Hockey Pants

Hockey pants are sized by waist, but coverage matters more than the number on the tag. The bottom of the pants should overlap the top of the shin pad by an inch or two when the player is standing, and the thigh guards should sit on the front of the thigh.

Higher levels are lighter and more tapered, with better protection at the hips, kidneys and tailbone. Always try pants on with the shin pads and shoulder pads, since the three pieces have to meet.

Fit check

  1. Pants reach to the top of the kneecap or just over the shin pad.
  2. The kidney guard covers the lower back without riding up in a crouch.
  3. The belt or laces hold them without suspenders pulling them tight.
  4. No gap between the pants and the shoulder pads at the front.
