Fitness Equipment: Free Weights

Hockey players train off the ice, and free weights are the simplest home gym: a few pairs of dumbbells, a kettlebell and a bar with plates cover most strength work. Free weights are sold by the pound, and good used iron does not wear out.

Rubber-coated dumbbells are quieter and kinder to floors; cast iron costs less. Kettlebells are the best single tool for hip power, which is where skating speed comes from.

Fit check

  1. Start lighter than you think and add weight when every rep is clean.
  2. Rubber mats under the weights protect the floor and the weights.
  3. Check used dumbbells for loose heads and cracked handles.
