A hockey helmet only protects when it fits snugly and sits level, one finger-width above the eyebrows. Minor hockey in Canada requires a CSA-certified helmet and a full certified face mask or cage, and each helmet carries a manufacturer's expiry date.
“Combo” means the helmet came with a cage already fitted. The price difference between levels buys lighter shells, better liner foam and finer adjustment, not a different safety standard: every certified helmet passes the same test.
Fit check
- Snug with the adjustment fully open, then tightened until it does not move when you shake your head.
- The front sits one finger-width above the eyebrows.
- The chin strap touches the chin; the cage's chin cup sits on the chin, not below it.
- The CSA sticker is present and the expiry date on the shell has not passed.
