Skates are the one piece of equipment that decides whether a player enjoys the game. A skate that is too big lets the heel lift and blisters the foot; one that is too stiff for the player's weight never flexes forward and pushes them back on their heels.
Hockey skates usually run a size to a size and a half below street shoes. Levels differ mainly in boot stiffness, liner, tongue and blade holder: an entry skate is soft and forgiving, a top model is a rigid, heat-mouldable shell built for a heavy, strong skater.
Fit check
- Toes just brush the toe cap when standing, and pull back when you bend your knees.
- The heel stays locked in the pocket when you flex forward: no lift.
- No pinching across the widest part of the foot. Width matters as much as length.
- Stiffness matches the skater. Kids and new skaters need a boot they can bend.
